Arson is a crime of intentionally setting fire to buildings, wildland areas, vehicles or other property with the intent to cause damage. 

The maximum penalty for the offence depends on the intent and the damage caused.  The basic offence of arson has a maximum penlty of 7 years.  If the police allege an intention to endanger life then the maximum penalty is 25 years.

Prosecutions for arson rely upon allegations of motive and circumstantial evidence including telephone records and forensic evidence.
